Summer Benefit Premiums and Coverage for Part-Time Faculty

Summer Benefit Premiums and Coverage for Part-Time Faculty

Part-time faculty covered by group health benefits who are expected to return with a least 6 units in the fall semester and will not be teaching in the summer must remit timely premium payments to maintain insurance coverage.  Faculty members have the following options:

  • One lump sum payment in the full for the period of June - August by June 1, 2026 OR
  • Monthly payments paid at the beginning of each month (June 1, July 1, August 1)

Please note: arrears collection through fall payroll is no longer permitted.  If premiums are not received within the 30-day grace period, coverage will be terminated, and COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) will be offered upon loss of coverage.

Part-time faculty covered by group health benefits who will be teaching over the summer will continue to have insurance premium deductions taken from their paycheck.  However, if your deductions exceed your earnings, you must remit timely premium payments to maintain insurance coverage.  Faculty members have the following options:

  • One lump sum payment in full for the period of June - August by June 1, 2026 OR
  • Monthly payments paid at the beginning of each month (June 1, July 1, August 1)

Any shortfall must be resolved in real time.  Deferral of premium balances to fall payroll is not permitted.  If a shortfall is not resolved within the 30-day grace period, coverage may be terminated and COBRA will be offered.

Part-time faculty covered by group health benefits who will not be teaching over the summer and will not be returning to teach at least 6 units in the fall semester of 2026, or whose fall assignment falls below the 6-unit eligibility threshold, will lose eligibility for group benefits.  Faculty members have the following options:

  • One lump sum payment in full for the period of June - August by June 1, 2026 OR
  • Monthly payments paid at the beginning of each month (June 1, July 1, August 1) OR
  • Drop insurance coverage - faculty members will be eligible for COBRA, continuation of health insurance. COBRA information will be mailed/e-mailed within 30 days of the last day of coverage.  Coverage will be cancelled effect September 1.

COBRA will be offered upon loss of eligibility, generally effective at the end of the summer coverage period (the exact effective date depends on our individual status).

Loss of Coverage Due to Non-Payment: If premiums are not received within the applicable 30-day grace period, your coverage may be terminated.  In these cases, COBRA will be offered due to the involuntary loss of coverage.

Payments can be made via check payable to LMU and sent to

Human Resources

Failure to submit payments on time may lead to benefit coverage cancellation.
