Aetna will Replace Anthem as LMU’s Primary Healthcare Provider in 2023

LMU’s 2023 Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 31 through Nov. 18, 2022. One major change for the coming year is that Aetna will replace Anthem as the university’s primary medical carrier beginning on January 1, 2023. Healthcare costs continue to increase significantly and Anthem did not provide the university with acceptable rate renewals for 2023. To ensure we can continue offering quality healthcare at an affordable cost, and after careful consideration and consultation with the University Comprehensive Benefits Committee and Benefits Advisory Committee, we determined that Aetna is our best option. Please note that Kaiser Permanente HMO will continue to be available for 2023.

No action is required of you at this time, but we encourage you to prepare for Open Enrollment and the Aetna transition by reviewing your options and remaining engaged as we share additional information soon.

  • Many Anthem network doctors also participate in the Aetna network so please visit the Aetna Provider Search Directory and follow the steps provided (HMO planPPO and Consumer Driven Health Plan).
  • All benefits eligible employees must enroll in a medical plan during 2023 Open Enrollment. That means that you MUST elect medical coverage during Open Enrollment regardless of whether you choose Aetna or Kaiser or you will lose your medical coverage in 2023.
  • You will continue to have access to high-quality medical coverage through Aetna. With Aetna’s plans, you will have the same level of high-quality, comprehensive medical coverage that you enjoy under Anthem’s plans today.
  • For those currently receiving major medical treatment, ongoing care with your current provider(s) may be approved for patients with specific conditions, such as cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatments, patients who are hospitalized on the effective date of coverage, or women in their second or third trimester of pregnancy. If you’re receiving ongoing care, you may be eligible to complete your care with your current provider even if he or she doesn’t participate in the Aetna network.
