Alternative Transportation

LMU offers a diverse range of multi-modal transportation options, supported by robust infrastructure. Transportation is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter, contributing to poor air quality and climate change. Nationally, the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel used in the transportation sector accounts for approximately 31% of total U.S. CO₂ emissions, making it the second-largest emissions source.

To address this issue, LMU has implemented a suite of alternative transportation initiatives aimed at minimizing single-occupancy vehicle trips and promoting low-impact commuting. These efforts include the operation of an on-campus bike shop, as well as continued investments in fleet electrification.

Currently, more than 85% of LMU's 260-vehicle fleet consists of electric and hybrid vehicles. This transition has significantly reduced direct emissions from university operations and supports LMU's broader carbon reduction goals.

LMU has partnered with Los Angeles Country Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA or METRO) to increase student access to public transportation services. The U-Pass Program offers eligible students unlimited rides on Metro's rails and bus lines and is designed to streamline the process of purchasing college student discount fares.

Car Sharing

LMU encourages students, faculty, and staff to participate in car sharing through the ZipCar program. Currently the university has contracted seven vehicles from ZipCar for our campus location. Loyola Marymount University students, faculty, and staff can join Zipcar for $25. Receive up to $35 worth of driving credits the first month you sign up!

Alternative Transportation Incentive Program

The Alternative Transportation Incentive Program's (ATIP) intention is to reduce the number of Single Occupancy Vehicles on the road, reduce campus congestion, and contribute to an improvement of air quality. ATIP participants receive certain exclusive benefits as members beyond simply saving money on parking fees, gasoline, insurance and maintenance. A few of our current benefits include complementary parking for one-off occasions and automatic enrollment into our Guaranteed Ride Home Program.
