Carol McGowan, A.A.

Carol came to teaching later in life after working in the advertising, design, and publishing fields. Carol discovered the Early Childhood Education program at Santa Monica College, where she completed an Associate of Arts —Master Teacher degree, after learning about the preschool philosophy and practice in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Carol’s love of the arts and its relationship to literacy is transferred to the children here at the Center through the afternoon Color Mixing curriculum, where all the children—from the Little Roos to the MAC — have an opportunity to work with a number of different mediums, from water and food coloring to tempera paint, as well as learn about the Elements of Art through looking at their own work and the work of other artists. Before color mixing begins, a Circle Time is held where the children learn “color mixing” songs such as “Rainbow ‘Round Me” that also introduces signing to the children as well as listen to stories that introduce color mixing concepts, such as Mousepaint, Little Blue and Little Yellow, and Monsters Love Colors! “Color Mixing” Carol, as the children affectionately call her, also holds a Site Supervisor Permit from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
